Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr. Siazongo Siakalenge, led a Government delegation on a tour of the Golden Baobab Multi-Facility Economic Zone (MFEZ) in Kafue to assess progress on the industrial development project.
Mr. Siakalenge expressed satisfaction with the strides made toward the full development of the zone and commended the management and staff of Golden Baobab MFEZ for progress made.
“Your hard work and commitment are clearly reflected in the milestones achieved so far, which deserve recognition,” he said.
Mr, Siakalenga reiterated the Republican President’s call to decentralize investments beyond Lusaka, noting that the Golden Baobab MFEZ is a prime example of this vision. He noted that the zone is expected to attract US$300 million in investments and create over 2,000 jobs for Zambians within the next five years.
Golden Baobab MFEZ representative Mr. Paul Wu Jinghui thanked the Government for its support, citing the approval and designation of the zone as a major enabler for industrial growth.
“We are committed to developing the Golden Baobab MFEZ and attracting more companies to set up operations here. This will not only create jobs but also reduce Zambia’s dependence on imported products,” Mr. Jinghui said.
The zone is expected to host cutting-edge technologies and advanced manufacturing activities, many of which are new to Zambia. Planned activities include:
• Assembly of 40-tonne tipper trucks for mining operations.
• Earth-moving equipment and commercial vehicle assembly.
• Steel processing and food processing plants.
• Two- and three-wheeler motorcycle assembly.
• Solar energy plant and electric vehicle assembly.
These developments will position the Golden Baobab MFEZ as an emerging hub for advanced industrial activities, supporting the vision to produce 3 million tonnes of copper by 2031 and also promote exports to neighbouring countries.
Mr. Siakalenge was accompanied by Mr. Alfred Sakiya, Permanent Secretary for the Management Development Division, and Mr. Hilton Chibeleka, Permanent Secretary for Special Duties at Cabinet Office. The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) was represented by Mr. Febian Muleya, Assistant Director for Special Economic Zones and Gregory Mutumba Assistant Director Investment Tracking, alongside other senior government officials and stakeholders.
